How to graduate
New rules for registering for Master’s degree examinations
From the July 2025 degree examination session onwards, the procedures for managing degree examinations have changed.
There are now two deadlines, not just one.
Firstdeadline
By this date, students must submit their degree application online, following the procedure found here: https://portale.unipv.it/it/didattica/corsi-di-laurea/studiare/laurearsi and pay the MAV payment slip that will have been generated.
It is no longer necessary to send forms via the direct line to the Student Office
Second deadline
The final deadline for registering for exam sessions and passing the remaining exams. Students and lecturers are reminded to take due care during this phase to ensure that any outstanding exams are recorded in the exam register by the date of the session.
If all exam records are not completed on time, you will NOT be able to graduate.
Between the first and second deadlines, you MUST upload your thesis online via Esse3.
Additional language skills (3 ECTS) and Final exam preparation (24 ECTS) will be certified by the second deadline; at this stage, students do not need to do anything as the exam sessions are closed and managed by our Office.
It is NO LONGER necessary to send forms via the direct line to the Student Office.
These changes will apply to all degree examination sessions until the end of 2025.
In order to ensure international visibility and with the supervisor’s consent, theses may be written either entirely in Italian or entirely in English. For theses written in English, the title must appear in both Italian and English on the title page.
All theses, regardless of the language of the main text, must include a comprehensive summary of approximately 5–10 pages (including illustrations and graphs) in the other language. The summary shall contain a summary of the introduction, results and conclusions. It is not necessary to include the experimental section; the bibliographical references shall be shared with the main text of the thesis. The summary must be placed at the beginning of the thesis, between the table of contents and the main text.
In order to minimise the risk of plagiarism, final-year students are advised to correctly cite any text or graphic material belonging to others, bearing in mind that they themselves are primarily responsible for what they write.
The thesis will consist of a non-editable PDF file to be submitted to the Student Office by uploading it online via the secure portal, within the deadlines for registering for the final examination. The Supervisor and the members of the Examination Board will be able to access all documentation relating to each candidate in their reserved area, including the electronic copy of the thesis, which may thus be viewed or downloaded. In the case of external placements, the candidate must provide an additional copy of the thesis (in electronic format) directly to the company supervisor, who will act as co-supervisor. In the case of theses carried out at industrial companies and containing confidential material, the candidate, when uploading the thesis, may restrict its distribution to institutional recipients only (Supervisor and Examination Board), blocking publication permanently or for a specified period.
Digital archive of degree theses
All copies of degree theses from July 2024 onwards can be consulted on the website https://unitesi.unipv.it/.
When applying for a degree, the graduate may choose the settings provided in advance by the ESSE3 management system (open access publication, restricted access or an embargo of 6, 12, 18 months), which complies with current legislation on the matter. Under this legislation, the author of the thesis is always regarded as the rights holder, and therefore the final decision on which option to choose always rests with the author.
This means that, if the theses being discussed contain sensitive data, it is always preferable to make an informed choice when completing the application for the degree.. It is therefore important that the graduate consults with their supervisor/co-supervisor/industry supervisor before completing the application.
Degree mark
The final mark is calculated as the weighted average of the course examinations (calculated by assigning a value of 30.5 to a mark of 30 with honours and taking into account any additional examinations passed), to which up to 5 points may be added; if the score obtained is greater than 113 (not rounded), the thesis supervisor may request that the distinction be awarded, which must be approved unanimously by the examination board.
In-person exam
Candidates must send their PowerPoint presentation to their examination board chair, who will upload it to the computer in the examination room; however, we recommend that you bring a ‘back-up’ copy on a USB stick.
The results will be announced immediately after the discussion.
The committee and the notice of the meeting, including the schedule, will be posted in the members’ area as soon as they have been finalised.
